Here are the top 10 best and most unique alarm clocks you can buy.

#1 – Best Traditional Alarm Clock – Sony Dream Machine ICF-C318

Sony Alarm ClockIf anyone has perfected the art of creating alarm clocks, it’s Sony. They’ve been making their range of alarm clocks (Dream Machines as they like to call them) for over thirty years. They’ve come a long way in that time and this 2006 model certainly packs a punch.

The Sony Dream Machine ICF-C318 is priced just like any regular alarm clock, but it comes jam packed full of features.

  • Dual alarms – Set independently to radio(FM/AM) or buzzer
  • Extendable snooze time – From 10 minutes to an hour
  • Automatically adjusts DST for seven time zones – Never come in an hour late for work again!
  • Three brightness settings: low, medium and high
  • A Battery backup in case there’s a power cut during the night

#2 – Sunrise Alarm Clock – Philips Wake Up Light HF3520

Philips Wake Up LightInstead of being startled awake with an alarm, imagine slowly coming out of sleep in the morning. When it’s time to wake up, you’re already awake and ready to start the day. Sounds like just a dream for most people, but the Philips Wake Up light seeks to make this a reality.

This alarm clock is a dawn simulator. Instead of being woken up by a loud noise, this alarm clock wakes you up using light. The light starts as a dim red glow 20 to 40 minutes before you wake up. It slowly gains intensity, becoming a bright white light at your desired wake up time. It then plays a choice of 6 natural wake up sounds or the radio to gently let you know that it’s time to get up.

Waking up to light isn’t as revolutionary as it sounds. It’s how we humans naturally wake up, long before electric lights and curtains were invented.

The first light of the morning tells your body clock that the sun has come up and that it’s time to get up. The body clock then works to slowly ease your body out of sleep and become more alert. A natural, refreshing and completely effortless way to wake up in the morning.

#4 – Extra Loud Alarm clock – Sonic Alert SBT425ss

Loud Alarm ClockIf you have trouble waking up in the morning, needing 2 or more alarms to wake you up, this one’s for you.

This alarm has an adjustable volume that goes up to a huge 113 decibels. That’s louder than a subway train or a chainsaw. You can adjust the alarm’s tone to make it as pleasant or as irritating as you please.

But if the sound of a subway train rolling past your bed isn’t enough to get you out of bed, this alarm clock comes with a bedshaker. Put it under your mattress, or even your pillow, and when your alarm goes off you’ll be shaken awake. The bedshaker can be used with the buzzer or on its own.

It can also be connected to a phone so that a loud telephone ringer goes off when someone’s calling you. Useful maybe if your phone is in your bedroom and you can’t hear it in other rooms of the house, but most people probably won’t need this extra feature.

The alarm clock features:

  • Automatic DST adjustment
  • Dual alarms that can be turned on or off for weekends and weekdays
  • Temperature display
  • Keeps the time even when there’s a power cut

#6 – Aromatherapy Alarm Clock – Oregon Scientific Aroma Diffuser

Aromatherapy Alarm ClockThis unique alarm clock uses a combination of scent, sound and light to wake you up in the morning.

It features an ultrasonic diffuser. Fill it with a glass of water and add a few drops of essential oil. The diffuser evaporates the mix of water and essential oil, filling the air with fragrance. Because it’s ultrasonic there’s no flame and no heat.

The alarm clock also has a choice of 5 natural sounds and a choice of 6 different mood lighting options.

You can use this aromatherapy alarm clock for both waking up and falling asleep. For falling asleep choose a relaxing fragrance such as lavender or jasmine, blue or purple mood lighting, and whichever sound you find the most relaxing. For waking up, choose an invigorating scent such as lemongrass, orange or yellow mood lighting, and a more upbeat sound.

This alarm clock provides a wonderfully relaxing way to both fall asleep and start the day.

#7 – Runaway Alarm Clock – Tocky

TockyIf you’re one of those people who casually lean over to press snooze again and again until it’s way past the time you wanted to wake up, then this alarm is for you.

You start by setting the number of snoozes you want to allow yourself to have. Once you’ve reached the end of your snooze limit, the alarm goes off and the alarm clock rolls off your bedside table and rolls around your room. To turn it off you have to catch it, by which time you’re out of bed and wide awake! This YouTube video shows it in action.

You can upload your own MP3s to use as the alarm by connecting it to your computer or choose one of the build in alarm sounds. You can also record your own voice to use with the alarm to give yourself a bit of extra encouragement to wake up.

#8 – Silent Alarm Clock – Shake-N-Wake

Silent Alarm ClockThis is the perfect solution if you need to wake up in the morning without disturbing your partner. This alarm clock vibrates instead of playing an alarm. You can wear it on your wrist or detach it from the strap and put it under your pillow.

It’s a great concept, but it’s not quite as silent as you might hope. It’s similar to the vibration on a mobile phone. So you can still hear it, but it’s still far quieter than a traditional alarm clock.

Unless your partner is an extremely light sleeper, this alarm clock will wake you up and leave them sleeping.

#9 – Flying Alarm Clock

Flying Alarm ClockThis is a simple alarm clock with a one very big difference.

When it’s time to wake up, a loud air raid style alarm goes off, the propeller powers up and launches itself into the air. To turn off the alarm, you have to find the propeller and attach it back to the top of the clock. There’s no other way of turning it off so you’re forced out of bed.

It’s a great idea for heavy sleepers. But judging by the Amazon reviews, it does seem to have some reliability issues, which is a shame because it’s a great concept. Still, it’s pretty cheap so it might be worth a shot.

#10 – Gun and Target Alarm Clock

Target Alarm ClockHere’s a fun way to wake up and start the day. When it’s time for you to wake up the target pops up and the only way to turn it off is to shoot it with the gun.

There’s tow modes. Easy, where you only need to shoot the target once. Or hard, where you need to shoot the target five times, by which time you’ll be wide awake. For extra difficulty you can put the gun over at the other end of the room making it harder to shoot the target and forcing you to get out of bed.

It’s perfect for those who need a little bit of encouragement to wake up in the morning.

The downside is that you can’t plug it into the wall. Instead it relies on 4 AA batteries, so it’s probably a good idea to use rechargeables. But because it’s free from the wall socket, you can easily place it anywhere in your room

This video shows it in action.

Bonus – Bacon Alarm Clock

Bacon Alarm ClockProbably the strangest and most creative method devised for getting you out of bed.

Put a rasher of bacon inside the clock before you go to bed. 10 minutes before your wake up time it starts cooking the bacon. When it’s time to wake up the bacon pops out and circulates the freshly cooked smell around your bedroom.

You wouldn’t want to let the bacon go cold, so you get out of bed to eat the bacon. By the time you’ve finished eating, you’ll be wide awake and ready to start the day, and probably eager for more bacon!

Unfortunately this alarm clock is only a prototype and not yet in production. But perhaps with public demand you’ll be able to buy your own bacon alarm clock in the future.
